After its world tour, the exhibition “1810-1812, Breguet makes the first wristwatch, fit for a queen” is back in China for the third consecutive year. Acclaimed at each of its stops, this retrospective tribute to the Queen of Naples chose Guangzhou - third most populous city after Shanghai and Beijing - for its comeback in the Middle Kingdom. As mentioned in our series “The moon in Saxony’s sciences”, the earth’s satellite has attracted people’s curiosity for millennia. This fascination is shared also by our watchmakers: they leverage all the potential of science and technology to reproduce the moon’s radiance as brilliantly as possible.

Responsible for the rich blue colour of our solid gold lunar discs is a patented coating process. It absorbs all non-blue colour spectra in the incident light. The result is an intensely blue surface on which the up to 2116 sharply contoured stars in different sizes stand out in vibrant contrast. The smallest stars have a diameter of merely 0.07 millimetres.

The evening was a special event to enjoy the talent of this young prodigy through a program that combined the works of the greatest composers in history—Beethoven, Chopin and Joplin. Following the concert, guests had a chance to admire Breguet creations during a cocktail reception. Among the displayed pieces, the high jewellery watch Petite Fleur was a crowd favorite. The two versions of the famous Classique La Musicale were also presented, two masterpieces that apart from telling the time, house a remarkable patented musical mechanism who plays a piece of Bach or Rossini. Yesterday 45 years ago, the first man set foot on the moon, and further astronauts followed suit in subsequent years. They brought mineral samples back from their adventurous forays, making it possible to identify the moon as the origin of meteorites. A slice of the world’s biggest specimen of a moon meteorite is on display at the “terra mineralia” collection in Freiberg (Saxony), and recently met with our timepieces for a shooting.
