On 23 March 1875, 140 years ago to the day, Ferdinand Adolph Lange was granted the US patent No. 161244 for his innovative construction of the three-quarter plate in watch movements: instead of having to dismantle the entire movement, the barrel could now be easily removed by releasing just two screws – a small but decisive detail. Today, the three-quarter plate still graces many of our movements.
